Hij is vooral bekend om zijn religieuze (muur)schilderingen. Aan de Amsterdamse Sint-Nicolaaskerk werkte hij over een periode van dertig jaar. De architect van de kerk, Adrianus Bleijs, vond het kruiswegontwerp van Dunselman \u2018te gothiek\u2019. Oftewel, te complex. De architect doelde op de ingewikkelde geloofsverdieping die Dunselman in zijn schilderkunst nastreefde. Gedoodverfd tot gotische invloeden, is het minder bekend dat Dunselman zich ook door de Renaissance liet inspireren. Hij wilde verhalen vertellen met beeldmiddelen uit de Renaissance.
